“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
As a registered acupuncturist with a background of working with the body (Shiatsu Massage and 1 year of Osteopathy) I have learned to utilize acupuncture in a gentle, precise and effective manner. Using Acupuncture for the last eight years, I have seen many female patients in my clinic.
Interesting enough I usually see more female clients than male clients in my clinic. Is it that women feel more comfortable asking for help? or is it that women are more sensitive to their bodies than Men. It seems like women wish to be more connected to their bodies and can sense if a certain area in their body needs help.
I like to give nourishing acupuncture treatments that will help you feel more expanded and present, I use very fine needles with minimum stimulation to create a very comfortable and effective acupuncture session. You will feel more relaxed during the session and afterwards, you will also feel more clear.
During the session you might feel that energy and sometimes emotions will release from your body leaving you feeling more clear, grounded and expanded.
The bread and butter of most acupuncture practices are the treatment of Pain and Structural Imbalances, this is usually when acupuncture is first introduced to a client and when a client realizes that acupuncture has merit to it, especially when they feel an improvement in their pain symptoms.
When the pain goes away or diminishes after needles are inserted in places in the body that are at different location than where the pain is located, this is when clients start to get really puzzled. When this happens I usually explain that acupuncture works with different relationships in the body and through ‘energy channels’ or ‘ Meridians’ which have acupuncture points on them. These Meridians and acupuncture points interact and affect other meridians or organ systems. By using these meridian relationships we can target specific areas in your body to help these area or body systems to better self regulate and Heal.
- Hip issues (quite common after the age of 60)
- Lower Back Pain (during pregnancy or on different life stages)
- Tight Neck and Shoulders
- Plantar Fasciitis (pain at the bottom of the foot – esp when waking up in the morning and frozen shoulder)
- Knee pain
- Frozen Shoulder
Acupuncture works well for these conditions. The frequency of treatment depends on the age of the client, how chronic is their condition (for how long did they had this condition), how severe is their conditions and if there is any chronic health condition in the background.
- Menstrual Cramps
- Fertility Issues
- Pregnancy – early stages or later stages.
If there is a chronic issue with especially with menstrual cramps – there might be some endometriosis or a cyst involved – working with a gynecologist might be a good idea. Acupuncture works well for Fertility Issues and when IVF if used it increases that chance of success when going through IVF treatment.
see this article from webmd for example, the results from this study states that women in both groups got pregnant but the rate of pregnancy was “significantly higher in the acupuncture group — 34 pregnancies, compared with 21 in the women who received IVF alone.”
Pregnancy & Hormonal Conditions
In my experience Acupuncture is also effective in relieving back pain and morning sickness during the 1st stages of pregnancy.
Another common area in my practice is Hormonal issues (Hot Flushes, Mood Swings ) which to my experience acupuncture by itself can have some affect but will take some time with regular treatments to create a lasting change. (for hot flushes you might want to try Maca Powder twice a day.)
Stress and Mood Disorders
As for Stress and Mood Disorders such as:
- Chronic Headaches
In my experience acupuncture is quite effective and with regular treatments there will be a shift in mood and in how you feel in your body.
Mental health issues can be helped with acupuncture combined with psychotherapy or medication if needed. if the issue is not too severe acupuncture can definitely give you a boost and make you feel better.
Very often my female clients will complain of having Low Energy, there could be many reason for low energy, starting with food sensitives, stress, lack of exercise, depression and many more. In my practice I work with the concept of ‘the full glass’, which means if you glass is full with different issue that are creating a drag on you body and nervous system, clearing some of this ‘drag’ will benefit your general health and your energy level; Acupuncture can help the nervous system normalize various spinal segments that innervate your internal organs. Once these spinal segments are normalized and they way your nervous system innervates your tissue normalize as well – you feel like you have more resources in your body and your energy level increases.
For example: a female client had pain in her lower back, on the left side at the level of the sacro-iliac joint. When her abdomen was palpated the lower left margin abdomen where part of her Large Intestines was located. Touching that area in her abdomen was very tender to touch and it was very tight. Treating a point on the Large Intestine meridian (on the other side on the wrist) relaxed her intestines and released the tightness in her lower back & Sacro-Iliac joint.
The reason her body responded this way to the treatment was that she had a ‘holding pattern’ in her lower abdomen that affected her lower back (The intestines are attached to the spinal column with connective tissue). Using the knowledge of Chinese Medicine and Meridian relationship with the internal organs, I Used a point on her wrist on the large intestines meridian that created more blood flow and a release in the organ or large intestines which affected her lower back in a positive way. Doing so also cleared some ‘drag’ from a system – corrected the blood flow to the intestines and helped the whole circulatory system work more efficiently – promoting her general energy level.
Acupuncture can do a lot from you when it is used in its holistic context!
Acupuncture can be also looked at as a kind of neurological medicine, it normalizes spinal segments that innervates your muscles, Internal organ and Glands so they can work better, which will have the affect of a reduction in your symptoms and having less ‘drag’ on you system so you will have Increased energy level, better range of motion and an increased sense of well being.
